The University of Law (ULaw) instructed Daniel Watney LLP to review their business rates assessment and seek a reduction in their annual rates liability at their campus in the City of London. Our Role

The Business Rates team carried out a thorough review of the business rates assessment.

The property was inspected to ensure the Valuation Office Agency had measured ULaw’s demise correctly.

An appeal was lodged seeking a reduction to ULaw’s Rateable Value which appeared excessive following our due diligence.

The team negotiated a reduction on behalf of BCA with the Valuation Office Agency.

Following settlement of the appeal and reduction in assessment, the team liaised with the London Borough of Camden to secure a backdated refund.

Result

The Business Rates team successfully challenged the excessive rating assessment and secured a reduction in Rateable Value from £1.5m to £530K, saving ULaw over £1.6m in rates liability over a 7 year period.
