History of Daniel Watney
In 1859 Daniel Watney started up the firm that today bears his name. As a sole practitioner, Watney took offices at 26 Poultry, London EC2 close to Bank and not far from the firm's current offices in Hosier Lane.
By 1870, Watney was appointed director of The Auction Mart and was the first president of the Surveyors Institution (later to become the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).
The first of his three sons joined the partnership in 1887 and it was 1912 before the first non family member joined as partner. Following Daniel’s death in 1923, grandson Robin was made a partner in 1924; the last family member to do so.
The firm expanded considerably and moved to nearby Frederick’s Place in EC2. The offices suffered acute bomb damage in 1940, and immediately after the war Daniel Watney & Sons merged with architectural business Eiloart Son and Inman. It also merged with another surveying firm, TC Nunn and later merged with Percy H Clarke in 1967. The firm was known as Daniel Watney Eiloart Inman & Nunn until 1983.
Following the merger with Douglas Young and Co. in 1983, it reverted back to the more manageable name, Daniel Watney.
Now based in modern offices in Hosier Lane, London EC1, Daniel Watney employs around 35 people and offers expert advice on commercial and residential property throughout London and beyond.
